  • It is recommended and your local building codes need to be checked.

Regardless of whether the old shingles are removed, a layer of underlayment should be installed prior to any metal roof installation. Always make sure, too, that your roof is installed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. Leaving the old shingles in place has several positive benefits.

Hi Jim: Metal roofs can be installed over your existing roof without tearing off shingles, provided local building codes allow it. I just got a new roof last week, and only had 1 layer of shingles. But, our code is no more than 1 layer of shingles. It used to be 3, but now only 1. So, check your local code ordinances. Tear-off is messy and raises the cost of the job,, but preparation is the key to a good and long lasting job. Good luck.

Check your local ordinances; some cities do not allow another layer of roofing placed over another, depending on how many layers. If installed by a professional roofing company, they should be able to advise you.

Hi! As the others have mentioned, rules vary. So do manufacturer warranties. When we had a new roof put on, we also had new vents installed and the wood and everything was gone over carefully. It was included in our price, as was the cost of removal. They did a great job. If you cover problem areas, they will still be problems with additional weight on them from the new roof. Good luck and stay safe!

The existing roof with shingles helps make a good underlay for a metal roof. You don't say how many layers of shingles your roof has, it would be better with at least 1 layer and that should not effect it by weight as metal roofs are lighter than shingled roofs.

Only if you have rot under the shingles or two layers. If it’s single and no rot, leave for extra isolation.

Hi Jim, Metal roofs can be installed over your existing roof without tearing off shingles, provided local building codes allow it. ... Make sure to consult local building codes before having a metal roof installed directly over old shingles. Some jurisdictions may require full tear-off whenever a new roof is installed
