Hi! Neither one will actually give you privacy but, are great for securing your yard. Drive around any neighborhood and you will see what I mean. Privacy fences aren't possible for every situation, but, they do give you privacy. If those are your only options, consider some shrubs, too. Good luck and stay safe!
Here is an article comparing different materials for building a privacy fence.
I would say neither will offer any private unless you are going to add some sort of screen to them. You can buy bamboo screens that you can attach to them. I would look for a more solid fence like colourbond.
Hi Allana, wire or chain fencing doesn't provide a lot of privacy unless you let a creeper cover the gaps between the links.
Neither will be very good with privacy as they can be seen through, unless you thread something through the gaps or grove something up them....
Chain link with plastic slats through it offers a little privacy, just chain link without the plastic offers very little privacy.
If you add hedges along either fence, that might be the best option for privacy. Good luck!
If you truly want privacy, a wood fence is your best bet. If you do choose chain link, you can get slats that go through the chain link for privacy.
Neither is great for privacy. You can’t beat wood for that. But I’ve seen people plant fast growing vines on chain link and it looks fabulous and gives great privacy.
I'm not sure that either of them would be good for privacy unless you plan on getting the slats for the chain link fence. Here are some other great ideas for creating privacy outdoors.
Hello. These types of fences are not great for privacy they are more suitable for pet containment.
Grow a big hedge instead
If you put slats in your chain link fence it will make a huge difference. Where we got ours they make several different types of slats depending on the degree or privacy you desire. Besides the standard slat which offers very little privacy there are a privacy slats offered.
I think these fences will keep people out of your yard, such as kids... but, people can still see through them. I would look at more of a privacy type fence with vinyl that is higher up for privacy. Sometimes landscaping can help with privacy, too. Or a screen.
I did this but i used heavier studs and planted jasmine to grow on my fence.
Neither will gie you privacy unless you grow plants on it or similar
Hi Allana: Chain link is the strongest. If I had the choice, I'd use the chain link. It may be a little more money, but it lasts forever :) No matter what you thread through a chain link fence, it's only 3 feet tall, so anyone can look right over it :) So, if you're looking for privacy from someone walking through your yard, then I'd get the chain link. If you don't want anyone looking into your yard, then I'd consider a 6' tall privacy fence. Any type of fencing may need a permit in your area, so check that out. Good luck
Third option - wood - as it has been mentioned above. I always just used lumber and it worked just fine.
If you want to stick with chain link, I have seen some attachments you can get to clip on and make patterns or designs, just to make things less boring looking. Plus growing plants near your fence helps, for instance - hydrangeas.
Hi Allana, if you plant a fast growing vine on it, it won;t matter which one. But in general, the the chain fencing has privacy slats that can be added for privacy.
There are privacy slats that make a chain link fence almost completely private. Amazon also sells hedge privacy slats.
Amazon also sells screens that can attached to existing chain link fences for more privacy.
thanks everyone for ideas about what would have better privacy, I ended up having a good read of this https://www.stellafencing.com.au/chain-mesh-fencing-vs-tubular-steel-fencing/ and decided to do with tubular fencing now
Wire or chain link fencing are not going to give you privacy unless you add something like slats to the chainlink.
They won't provide much privacy, but you could try and grow some vines/plants/trees in front of the fence
