Quick IKEA Cabinet Makeover

3 Materials
30 Minutes

As some of you may now know, I am a Facebook Marketplace shopper! I highly recommend any and everyone becoming one as well! You can find some amazing things on there, especially for your home!

When we moved into our apartment, I really wanted to furnish it with pieces that weren't too expensive! Especially with it being our first apartment! I hopped on Facebook Marketplace and happened to stumble upon this IKEA cabinet, that I had actually had my eye on on the IKEA website! We purchased this piece for half the price IKEA was charging for it and it was in PERFECT condition! Even better, we were able to pick it up from someone who lived within five minutes of us! SCORE!

For the past year that I've owned this piece, I've felt the need to do SOMETHING to it! I initially thought I'd maybe paint it and distress it, but because it was in such perfect condition, I didn't feel like messing it up! However, this past week, I finally decided to something to it and I figured out what that something was!

I love how distressed pieces sometimes have those raw edges to them. It's usually the wood showing through these distressed edges, but with this piece being in great condition and it not being real wood, I figured that look wasn't something that I could make happen. I decided to purchase some metallic gold paint and PAINT the edges! No sanding or distressing necessary! It's super easy and a super quick project! The cabinet finally doesn't feel like a plain, black box like it did before! It's got a little interest now!

I also replaced the handles with these beautiful and inexpensive rustic handles that I purchased on Amazon! They also bring some new life to this piece!

You can update or give some new life to any piece of furniture you'd like with this quick and easy project too!

The Cabinet Before

This cabinet was literally a black box. No interest and nothing special to it. I could've lived with that but one thing I couldn't stand, was those boring handles!

The Paint

I chose to use a metallic gold paint. You can use whatever color you'd like!

The Brush

I used a small paint brush I had on hand. Make sure you use a brush that is small so that you can get some precision! It's also easier with a small brush as furniture edges are usually pretty thin.

The Painting

Dip the very edge of your brush in the paint. Be sure to brush off any excess paint, as you don't want it to drip down the furniture! (Unless that's the look you're going for!) Go slow and steady! My edges aren't all "perfect" but I'm okay with that!

The New Handles

I'm obsessed with these rustic handles I purchased from Amazon! They give the cabinet so much more life!

The Cabinet After

Ta-da! The finished product! Overall, it took me about a half hour to complete this project, as I tried to go as slow as possible so I'd get as much precision as possible!

Close Up of the Edges

Again, my furniture edges aren't exactly perfect, but if the piece was distressed, it wouldn't be perfect anyway!

Awesome! I just moved too and have a plain black IKEA dresser I knew needed something but an entire paint job seemed excessive. Your idea for handles and trim of paint is perfect for my dresser too! Thank you! I’m going to do this similar work to my dresser.

Less is More! Your metallic gold accent on the black piece is just right. Beautifully done.
