Make them into pretty pins. Spray paint them, add sequins, 'jewels' , etc. and glue a pin back on the back of them.
Paint or decoupage them and glue a magnet on the back.
Many years ago I made "jewelry" out of puzzle pieces. You can use as is and layer them however you want using cllors you like and spray with a clear coat to seal them or paint and decorate as you wish. The pin backs/clasps can be glued on the back of the arrangements of puzzle pieces/ The pin backs are available for purchase in the jewelry section of any craft store. They make great little gifts for friends.

Hello. Its often used in jewelry particularly pins. I think it could make a nice mixed media art piece when combined with paint
Several years ago a friend of mine made a boarder with puzzle pieces. She painted the puzzle pieces all pink (for grand daughter's room). She painted two thin lines on the walls and glued the puzzle pieces in between the lines. The grand daughter loved it. Good luck Daff. I wish you well.
mixed media projects are always a great way to use them.
Hi Daff, there are lots of puzzle piece projects here:

If you have small pieces - you can make necklaces out of like three that fit together and give them to family members. - like mom and daughters necklaces. You'd have to Spray them with a sealer to give the cardboard a bit more strenth - and you could paint them to represent something for the family. I've seen metal versions of these and thought they were really cute!
Flip upside down and do all solid brown for an advanced puzzle
If you are talking about jigsaw puzzle, then I recommend passing them on to a friend or charity. My wife knows many people that are doing puzzles during this Covid situation. When she is done she gives them to someone else and gets some from others. Sort of like trading books.
Hello Daff,
Decorate a tray or coffee table with them, or Lampshade! Donate to Seniors. or Charity shop. Decorate Plant Pots etc. Have fun!
There are a lot of good ideas in this article. You could use them to create cute Christmas ornaments: http://whattodowithold.com/what-to-do-with-old-puzzles/
You could also decoupage them onto boxes or tins for cute storage, or you can decoupage them onto indoor planters for flowers or plants.
You could decorate different bins for storage
