They are baked to kill and bugs in them, and oh does your house ever small so good!
Bake them on a sheet of aluminum foil so the sap does not get stuck to your cookie sheets, parchment paper would work too.

Hello. Baking your pinecones will help heat them to be sure there’s no insect critters coming in the house or any sort of mold spores or mildew will also be eliminated .
Pine cones may also have sap in them still which could make a mess if not dried properly. Baking your pine cones on a low temperature for about a half an hour can be just the thing to keep your Christmas free from unwanted pests. ... Place the pine cones in the oven, making sure to check them often so they don't burn.
Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and spread pine cones across it in a single layer. Place the pine cones in the oven for 30 minutes or until the cones are fully opened and the sap has melted.
You bake pinecones to ensure any bugs or insects are no longer living and a part of any project you make from the cones. You can also place the pine cones in a bag and place in a feezer.
There may be insects or their eggs hiding in them.
