A garland is always pretty or maybe a grapevine swag?
Wreaths ate a classic seasonal choice, more permanent decor might be a fashionable door knocker.
You can put garland around the doorway
Take a look at the many beautiful (seasonal) garlands at craft stores, like Joann's fabrics, Michael's, even Amazon. They can be attached with Command Strips so you won't have to use anything invasive to your frame. You can improvise to tailor it to your house:

I love to add seasonal decor around and over my front door. Here are some links to the ones I have done:

Hi Marie, you can puck up an over the door hanger at any dollar store, hardware store, or online check to ensure that it allows you to close the door properly, some doors are a tight fit. You can hang any type of item on these hangers. You can also do garland with smaller type tacks which will leave minimal marks

Hi Marie. There are a lot of over-the-door decorations to choose from here on Home Talk. Just click on the little blue house at the top of this page, left-hand corner. Boxes will drop down according to categories. You could click on "Christmas Decorating" for a lot of ideas, or type "Christmas Swags" in the search bar. You will see many to choose from, and the directions are attached. Good luck Marie, and Merry Christmas.
Hello Marie,
Permanent or temporary as in Seasonal?
You can do a swag to go over the door and down the sides. Another option would be "L" shape foam or wire, add greenery & flowers with other decor and hang on the corners.
It all depends on your style. An carved name plate may be nice.
Hi! Currently I have Command hooks for outside use on both my exterior doors. There are also heavy duty magnetic hooks that work on metal doors. If you want a swag type decor above your door, I would also recommend Command hooks for securing them since it doesn't damage your siding. Depending on what you want, a garland can be decorated for any holiday or season. Stay safe!
