Repurposed Tray Fall Door Decor
Every year, as the fall season arrives, I enjoy creating a new DIY fall wreath, and this year I'm using a repurposed wicker tray for some easy fun fall door decor.
Owliver, my Repurposed Baking Pan Owl Door Decor, is on the outside of the kitchen front door every year because even after a few years he's still my favorite fall thing. But I do like something new on the inside of the door.
And this year I'm using this lovely natural wicker tray that I found at my local thrift store for two dollars.
The tray is quite large, at about 20 inches across, so it really makes a statement all by itself.
But I'm repurposing it as a backdrop for some lovely fall florals and foliage.
You could of course leave the tray natural, if that's what you love, but I'm a color-loving gal so I spray painted it a nice bright sunny yellow.
I really wanted the tray to pop behind the fall foliage.
Two light coats did the trick.
This tray didn't have a glossy finish, but if you use a tray that does you may want to lightly sand before spray painting.
I also spray painted the outside of the tray because it might be visible.
Every fall I collect whatever fall foliage and flowers that I can find at thrift stores. It's pretty plentiful around here during the fall season.
Sometimes I get bags for a buck or two, and sometimes they're 50 cents per bouquet, which is still a great deal.
I started my repurposed tray wreath by creating a base with some flower bouquets.
I glued them at the stems in with my glue gun, and I also glued the odd leaf down here and there to keep the bouquets in place.
Then I just started filling and gluing bits in place in a way that I thought looked good.
And I just kept going. See that cute butterfly? It came as a bonus in one of the bouquets.
And here's my finished repurposed wicker tray fall wreath.
I chose the yellow for the tray because my foliage and florals were mostly oranges and reds. If I had mostly yellows and oranges I would have spray painted the tray red. And if I had mostly yellows and reds I would have spray painted the tray orange.
The idea was for the tray to act like a frame and make the colors really pop.
And here's the other butterfly that came with that same bouquet.
The bow is simply some burlap ribbon that I tied in a basic shoelace knot. Easy peasy! It's what I had on hand so I said, why not?
I just glued it in place to cover the stem ends.
To hang my repurposed tray diy fall wreath on the inside of my kitchen door I used some clear nylon thread that I threaded through the wicker and tied.
I really love the way the yellow pops against the aqua door, and it frames the oranges and reds nicely. For me the yellow works beautifully.
