Hi Juanita: It may be easier - and cheaper - to go to a thrift store and see if there is anything there you can make over. Or, are you talking about one of those really long tables that go behind a couch? I'd still check out various thrift stores.
To add a shelf to a table, add small brackets or fixing blocks to the legs at just below the point you want the shelf to sit. Then lay shelf on top! That's the easy way. Good luck!

Hi there. You might get lucky at a second hand shop and then you could paint it or add a shelf to the bottom...less work, less money.
