Here is info Henry but some of the stains may bleed through
You can use spray paint, do a design using different colors (preferably darker than the stain)
Hi Henry, what type of carpet are you looking to paint? If it is a low pile carpet you can definitely paint it in a pattern or with a stencil. A higher pile carpet is much harder to paint/stain.
Hi Henry, you will need to clean the stains as much as you can before painting. Good luck.

Yes, even carpets can get a makeover! Whether it's a larger area rug or a throw rug, you can paint carpet using a stencil and regular interior latex paint.
Go for colour darker than the stain. Best of luck!

Are you talking wall to wall carpet or just area rugs. Area rugs can be spray painted, although they will be still after painting. And you have to paint it darker than the stain. You could use fabric dye on an area rug. I would not attempt to paint or stain wall to wall carpet, that is a job for a professional, and it would probably be cheaper to replace.
If it is a low pile, you can try stenciling it.
Otherwise, I would try spray paint on it.
I would for sure stencil on it but it all depends how bad are stains. There are soooo many machines you can rent to help yourself out without additional headache of painting to clear stains
There are lots of posts here on painting a carpet/rug:
