Happy fall, y’all! Fall is such a fun time of year, and what better way to welcome it than with a gorgeous and classy-looking sign. This sign is so easy to make, and you can customize it however you want. It’s perfect for weddings, as a gift, or in your own home. For this tutorial, I focused on fall themes, but you can use this technique to make literally anything you want.

Tools and Materials:

  • Picture frame
  • Printed stencil
  • Tape
  • Paint markers
  • Colored paper (optional)

Take apart your picture frame

The first thing you’re going to do is take apart your picture frame. Glass is best for this project, but an acrylic picture frame can work as well. Put everything aside for the time being except for the glass itself.

Prep your stencil

For this project, you can use any saying you want. So head over to the Internet and print out a picture that you like. This will be your stencil. For one like mine just type in, “Happy Fall y’all” and choose your favorite one. Take the glass from the picture frame and lay it over your stencil so that the wording is centered in the glass. Tape down both sides of the glass. This will give you flexibility later on.

Paint markers for your DIY stencil sign
Start your paint marker

If you’re new to paint markers, you’ll find out that when you first open one the tip is white. You’ve gotta get the paint into the tip. So open it up and press down onto a scrap piece of paper until you see the tip change colors. Then test it out to make sure it’s ready, and you’re good to go.

Trace your happy fall y’all sign
Trace the stencil

Now you’re going to trace the words. When tracing block lettering you want to trace the outline of the letter, then fill it in. You definitely want to go letter by letter, though, so that you can complete each letter while the paint is still wet, allowing you to fix up any bubbles or imperfections as you go. The best way to trace it is to find the flow that works for you! A general rule to follow when it comes to lettering is that you go thin on the upstroke, and thick on the downstroke. If you mess up you can use a Clorox wipe to erase it, but just make sure to dry the area before continuing.

Finish up your DIY happy fall y’all sign

Replace the frame

Once the paint on your glass has dried, you can take it and put it back into the frame. Your two options for this are either to put the glass in the frame and close the little tabs as is or to put the frame back together in its entirety with a colored background behind the glass. Both are gorgeous!
