I believe you can still use traditional methods, of scoring and steaming.

  • Don’t. đŸ˜…

Leave it up! If in a moisture prone area (bathroom/kitchen) run a dehumidifier to pull out any lingering moisture. Wipe down walls with a strong grease-cutting cleaner. Prime well with an OIL BASED stain blocking primer. (Oil-based is key.) Lightly sand and skim coat any obvious seams or peeling areas. Hit those areas again with primer. Then simply get to painting. Plan on two, but probably three, coats.

If you try to remove from an un-prepped drywall you can pretty much count on having to do significant drywall repair work, plus all the priming/painting anyway.

If the paper was put on to the wall without proper preparation, or without proper adhesive, unfortunately there is no guarantee that the drywall will not sustain some damage during the removal process.

Not quite sure by what you mean the wall was not prepared for wallpaper, is the current paper peeling off in areas that makes you want to remove it? Or are you dissatisfied with the appearance of the walls under the paper? Either way, you want to remove it...buy or rent a hand held steamer, it will take patience and a delicate hand and a plastic putty knife to scrape. Another method is equal parts of fabric softener and water, apply that with a big sponge (like they use is washing cars), let that soak in and then use the plastic putty knife. You might encounter some wall damage from the process.

Use a scoring tool that you can use in circular motions. This will score the wallpaper and cut it into tiny little holes all over. Then you get a wallpaper dissolvant liquid that gets smeared on top of all the holes so that it soaks in. All of this is at Home Depot. Then peel off the paper. If it still doesn't peel off well, you might want to think about renting a wallpaper steamer. Beware, they are very messy which is why I really like the score tool and the spray.

If the wall hasn't been prepped well for wallpaper which is similar to what you are talking about I think......when it peels off, it is will also be taking drywall off along with it. this means that the wallpaper was put on right on top of the drywall without a coat of primer. you will have to spackle again and sand in those spots where it tore off drywall. Good luck! Removing wallpaper is not one of my favorite things. ahhh...!

I don't like scoring tools. They can do a lot of damage to the wall. I find that if you start at a seam and start to peel the upper paper off you can begin to spray water on the backing and let it sit for a minute or two until the water soaks into it you can peel off large sections without damaging the dry wall. If you have plaster underneath that is even easier. Use a fine misting bottle from the dollar store.

  • Please avoid painting over the paper, you could end up with a bigger mess than you started with if the paper bubbles, peels, or cracks. Try spraying some hot water on a corner first, let it sit for a few, and see if it peels off. It could be that simple, before you pull out the big guns.

If the wall was not primed or "sized" it will e hard to remove the wall paper. This is the only time that priming and painting is the only solution.

Mix warm water and fabric softener or white vinegar. Puncture small holes to penetrate and then saturate with the mixture. It will melt the glue. Once it’s off, wash with blue dawn soapy water .
