UPDATED How to add depth/interest to front door actually entire stoop?

I was inspired by the project showing how they created a copper finish patina on a painted door making me take a look at our plain Jane. I'm not looking for a metal look just something to add some interest. I realized the photo was old and I had made some changes since it was taken now a couple years ago.

Our major problem is that our front door is 100 feet from the street. The stoop in only 4 by 6 and really not visible until you are already in front of it.

So here are the updated photos

This was about 2 years ago
From the street front door is not even visible
Since then I moved the welcome plaque, added a stool and a couple more plants. Still hoping to find plants that can take the Florida sun for the metal plant holder on the left. As you can see the mat after about 1 1/2 years is already unsightly. I did like what one Hometalker did using a large canvas picture outside and think the right one on the left brick wall could be the answer for color.

Hi there, this is how one Hometalker added interest to her door using copper paint, really turned out pretty! https://www.hometalk.com/diy/windows-doors/doors/fall-front-porch-copper-door-31680674

I love this front area but ours is totally hidden from view until you are in front of it and only 4 by 6 once you are there. I would love to find a colorful canvas picture to put on my left side dark brick wall.

I recently found some western plaques that were black. Somebody threw them out in the trash. They looked flat with no definition. I wanted a copper patina but not like a verdigris, copper and green. So I looked online and found that a good look would be with a black base coat. So I left the black and started to dry brush with turquoise leaving some of the black peeking thru. Then I went over and dry brushed with copper over some of the black areas and lightly over the turquoise. Now it looks like they have been out in the weather for years.

Hello Brown, You can add some interest and depth to your beautifully painted door by adding some darker glaze to accent the panel design. Check out the glaze color choices at the paint department.

I would start by adding some color with a new paint job on your front door but the best answer would be a new door.

They have some cute ones with transoms (I see you already have sidelights). That would allow more light inside.

Stained or frosted glass with still let light in but provide privacy without needing to hang a curtain.

If you want to be different take out your square door and install an arched door.

Texture your door. Vertical stripes of raised wood that are painted the same color as the door will add texture and interest.

  • add a toe kick at the bottom in a patina copper

    A kick plate could work!

  • You could paint the panels or the edges of the panels as accents.

Try adding glaze in the panels to give them depth. I would go with brown on this color.

Hello one of those faux wood tone finishes might be appealing to add dimension-they are some tutorials about that out there.

Not so sure I’ve ever seen a metallic door perhaps you should post your project here when you’re done. It sounds like an exciting project!

    Hello,

Use a Dark Wax over the trim or the panels or the whole door for a richer look! OR

Pick out the Trim in White/Grey to co-ordinate with the Mortar in the Bricks. Enjoy!

Yes add a glaze to make the edges of the panels stand out. Take 3 parts glaze mixed with 1 part paint in a contrasting color. Paint in the crevices and wipe away. You will get a lot of depth doing this all over the door where there are paneled details.

  • Deb K Deb K on Oct 21, 2020

Hello J. you can paint a contrasting color in the panels, you could age is to look like sea wood by adding a bit of a turquoise, you could do a darker wash with the stain and wipe off technique. Hope this link gives you some inspiration,

you could distress the door to give it a updated look

  • Dee Dee on Oct 21, 2020

Personally I think it blends in too much. I would paint my front door a bold color. Red, Navy or Forest green will add depth.

I love forest green on a front door.

If you paint the trim a coordinating color it would look fabulous

HUMM. Passed thru my favorite thrift store after dropping off donations at the back door. This colorful flag grabbed my wallet and came home with me.

I'm thinking it's worth giving it a try. It will bring lots of color and eliminate the failed plant holder. You can see the blazing sun in the lower left corner of the photo

    What do you think?

  • SBlizzard SBlizzard on Oct 22, 2020

I would paint the door white to match your house trim. Then the door becomes your canvas and anything you put on the door will show up. The colors in that flag very pretty. The current color is too close to the brick color and anything even slightly dark will not show up.

  • SBlizzard SBlizzard on Oct 22, 2020

Also, I don’t know if the tall plant to the right of the porch is still there, but if so I would remove it.

I had bought two gray adjustable rods when I was at the thrift store thinking positively about this flag. Husband drilled two holes in the grout line for screws. I added a hem at the bottom to hold the bottom rod and this was done.

This may be a satisfactory solution for the moment.

NOW that door mat that looks terrible after about a year. Nothing last these days, I'm showing my age.
