Are you an old window collector too? If not yet, you just may turn into one after you see how easy this project is!

I love to collect old windows for all kinds of projects. But one of my favs is to make easy signs. The frames are perfect! And working on glass gives you more than one chance as it's so forgiving.

Stenciling on glass is easy, however it does require a special touch in order to get even coverage with no paint bleed.

Ready to learn how so you too can ramp up your old window game?

Here's how to stencil on glass, including trouble shooting tips!

Collect old windows

For single signs, watch for windows with only one pane and no individual muntin bars.

Plus, you can choose either side to work on, depending which wood frame side you prefer!

Select a stencil that fits

Any stencil will do! Just ensure it fits on your window.

My own chosen stencil measures within 10" x 10" which makes it so universal to fit on most anything!

How to stencil on glass

The goal is even coverage without paint bleed. I achieved this using a smooth foam roller with just the right amount of paint.

How to stencil on glass for even coverage:

  1. Coat a foam roller evenly with paint.
  2. Roll onto stencil with light, even coats.
  3. Repeat until desired effect is achieved.

Isn't this the cutest?!

That original chippy frame though... like icing on an already decadent cake! Old finishes add charm like nothing else, don't you think?

Old window signs also take on the colour of your walls so they don't darken the space! Just be sure to use paint that contrasts with your chosen spot.
