Turning Dresser Rustic
My neighbor gave me this dresser which we totally need for our country house but it needed some changes. My plan was to sand the top and restain it dark brown and paint the rest cream and age it.
They had painted it gray which was not ugly but it wasn't painted right.
First step was to apply the Citistrip and put plastic on top to strip the paint. I let it sit for a couple of hours.
It came right off except for a few spots. But I used mineral spirits to dissolve some spots.
After that, I proceeded to sand it down really well.
Next thing was to lightly sand the gray areas so that the paint could stick, but after doing the entire piece, I was loving the look of the wood coming through the gray. It was the "rustic" look I wanted!
I loved how that looked. So I sanded the knobs and proceeded to add stain to the top and the knobs.
Finally, I replaced the knobs and applied wipe-on poly in satin finish to the entire piece.
The end result was beautiful (at least for me) because it looks rustic.

I am not crazy about distressed or rustic either, but this turned out great.
Only thing that I would have suggested...remove the "teeth" strip. It kind of screams 90s turned rustic. I have popped those off numerous pieces, some leave a gap to fill, but most are either nailed or glued on.
