How can I refresh a brick fireplace that has been painted??
I purchased a house where the owners had painted the bricks with a briwnus red paint that I do not like. Can I strip the paint off or perhaps somehow make the brick look better? ( maybe paint/wipe with white paint ?) Thanks for helping me.

Hi! You do have options. If you want a solid white repaint, I would scrub it down. Then, I would prime it and paint it the color you want. If you would like to whitewash them instead of the more opaque finish, I would remove as much as you can, first. Stay safe.
You can paint it with white paint no problem.
I would consider painting it white. Stripping it would be quite difficult.
Stripping the paint off the brick will be a lot of work. I would repaint. Be sure to clean the brick well and use a good primer first.
Hello Bobbie,
Dry brush some or all of the bricks with one or more colours. Have fun! If you don't like the result - do it all over again or adjust! Have fun.
How well is the red paint sticking? Is it flaking off in places? If not you can just paint right over it. Thatās the easiest thing to do. :)
Hi Bobbie, what a bummer!
Stripping the bricks of paint will be a tedious task and will be very difficult to strip the bricks back to original because of the rough and porous surface.
You could use a large stiff brush to remove any peeling paint, clean the fireplace well with a cleaner, let dry.
Be sure to prime first with Kilz or Zinsser 1-23-3. Maybe even two coats as red is a difficult color to cover and tends to bleed through. A grey primer would help "cut" the red. An experienced paint sales person can help you with this. Then paint in the color of your choice in either satin or gloss finish.
I once painted a red brick fireplace glossy white and it entirely changed the look and feel of the entire room. It made the fireplace look very modern and helped lighten the look of the room. Good luck!
That's going to be a big job, especially if the existing paint is cracking and peeling. Wire brush those spots really well. Then paint over top.
you can white wash it here is info

If you're not a fan of a solid color, you can start with a base coat and then age it or add paint for texture.
How To Paint Fireplace Brick
I'd paint white over the red. Removing the paint completely would be very hard to do.
Stripping it sounds like too much work. I'd just paint over the red with a lighter color you prefer.
Hi Bobbie, you can repaint or whitewash whichever suits, i like the idea of grey, it does not show the smoke stain as much.

I would paint over the whole thing with white.
Easiest and cheapest idea is to give it a fresh coat of paint.
You can paint over it in whatever color you like. It's cheap and quick.
Easiest and least messy is to paint over it.
