Cheap Mud Kitchen From Upcycled Junk

10 Materials
1 Hour
Easy

Recently, I was asked to make a mud kitchen that anyone can make at home using household objects for a TV show.

You can find my more in-depth homemade mud kitchen DIY here.

Here's how I turned an old chest of drawers into a quick an easy mud kitchen in 1 hour!

I think this would make a great Christmas gift for kids - particularly on a budget as it uses household junk that many of us have lying around.

Washing Up Bowl

After measuring the diameter of a stainless steel bowl, excluding half the lip depth, I halved it and created a jig to draw a perfect circle.

NOTE: I highly recommend doing a test on an offcut first.

You'll also find other methods for different bowls in my blogpost link, along with safety tips.

I then drilled a hole inside the circle so I could jigsaw out my hole.

Adding a Utensil Holder on the Back

Next, I used some old pallet wood to screw a back on. This isn't essential, but I thought enhanced it.

I screwed two pieces either side at the same height and in the same position.

Then screwed 3 more along the back.

Adding Hobs Using CDs

For the hobs, I measured a square on the other side of the top.

Then spray painted some scratched or promotional CDs black and glued them down.

Adding Hob Dials

This old chest of drawers also had button shaped handles. So, I spray painted all four black and drilled holes under the hob area and fixed with nuts.

Adding Utensil Holders

For utensil hooks, I recycled old curtain tie back hooks I've had for years and never used.

And finally, I

  • Screwed the drawer shut for safety
  • Screwed some offcuts on the front for a towel rack
  • Screwed pallet planks on the drawers to create shelf storage as I'd pinched two of the drawers for an insect hotel & plant stand.
