How do I remove primer please?
Please help...I have used water based primer on a laminate piece and it is not sticking. Saw a video that said to use a shellac based primer to laminate surface. Please advise on how I can remove the water based primer without sanding it off. The laminate is not thick at all. Thanks in advance for your advice.
Hi Diane
Here is some info for you

Hi Diane, any paint stripper will work fine for this. Citrastrip is the more natural alternative to the really harsh ones. After you remove the old primer I would lightly sand the entire piece with fine grit sand paper, clean it thoroughly and then use an oil based paint (such as rustoleum) for a tough finish.
GrandsmasHouseDIY, thanks soooo very much for the advice.
Try mineral spirits on a rag.
Thanks Ann, sounds easy enough
The Citristrip will work just great, it is the least toxic of all of them. Just follow the directions. That will take off the primer and anything else.

Thank you Redcatec
Try Citristrip in a small area to see if it does anything to the laminate. Otherwise you may have to sand what does come off.
Thanks William, I was trying to avoid that work ...lol
Wipe down with mineral spirits. If you use a stripper, make sure to scrape away before it has a chance to dry. It's a horrible mess to remove if it gets dry.
As for painting, I would scuff well with fine sand paper first then clean with denatured alcohol to prep the surface for priming and painting. Use a bonding primer and you should be in good shape to paint.
Kathy, thank you so very much. You are on the right track. I've been told that I need a shellac based primer when painting laminate as it bonds very well. I did the sandpaper before using the water base primer, but still, no stick. Thanks again!
Use Citrastrip to remover the primer.
Hi Diane: I suggest you use Citristrip. It's really great on most surfaces. Good luck
I use Krud Kutter
Hello in this case I would suggest to call the primers customer service number to get the least offensive suggested choice for removal. I have spoken to reps from many paint manufacturers and their helpful consultations have been awesome.
Definitely Citristrip

Also I feel your pain and here is how I got it off my laminate piece - https://chascrazycreations.com/faux-wood-grain-table/
Thank you very much Chas...very helpful!
Hello,
You need to use ESP (Easy Surface Primer) Goes over Anything and seals it ready for paint. Best wishes.
Thanks Johnvallance82.
Sand it off
Hi! You could strip it off with steel wool and Citristrip. Good luck!
You can use a biodegradable remover https://amzn.to/3klrduf
That's awesome...thank you very much :)

You're welcome
Thanks All. I used the mineral spirits and the scrubbing side of a dishwashing sponge and it came right off. It was laminate material so I needed shellac based primer to stick and not the water based one that I had used. I appreciate all the advice each of you took time to give to me. Stay well and continue in kindness 👍🏽
Hi Diane, can you use a straight edge to remove it? Like a paint scraper or a straight edge knife? It would slip between the paint and the laminate and remove it.
