DIY Wood Spindle Ornaments

I have to confess something. Last year, I had every intention on making Matt a custom chess board set, but never finished. I was going through stuff in my craft room and found the bag of chess pieces I had made last year. I saw them and had a vision in my head that I couldn’t pass up. I ended up making these DIY Wood Spindle Ornaments and I love how they turned out. Matt’s custom chessboard set will have to wait for another time.

These DIY wood spindle ornaments aren’t real spindles, but made out of assorted wood shapes. I used wood glue to glue the different pieces together and let dry. Hobby Lobby has an amazing selection in the craft wood department. Can you tell what chess pieces these were going to be?

When your wood glue is dry, you can start painting your pieces with craft paint. I painted the pieces free hand, but you can use painter’s tape if you need help with separating colors. Most of the colors needed two coats of paint, so it was easy to touch up imperfections.

When the painted pieces were dry, I painted them with Glossy Mod Podge. I did this to protect the paint and give these guys a nice shine.

Let the Mod Podge dry completely.

I used Christmas wire to wrap around the top for hanging.

Since these were going to be chess pieces originally, they didn’t quite look like spindles. I used wood glue to combine the pieces and these DIY Wood Spindle Ornaments were perfect.
