How can I store potatoes?

You might want to pick up a few plastic bins that stack at the Dollar Tree. The biggest issue is that wherever they touch you have a higher chance of rotting. The newspaper idea may help but try to keep from stacking on top of each other because they will rot through the paper. That's why I was thinking of the narrow stacking bins. You can probably do 2 high and 3 deep if you turn sideways in the cabinet.

Not sure HOW damp your basement is but humid environment is okay.

Inspect all the potatoes for soft spots, sprouts, mold, shovel damage, and pest damage. Only perfect potatoes are suitable for long-term storage.

I believe the potatoes need air around them. I might suggest wire racks to keep them seperated.

One thing we did with a surplus potatoes was to can them. That might be an option to consider.

Potatoes need a cool, dark place with airflow. An unheated, enclosed porch may be a good place.

Many good suggestions about keeping air flow in the area where you're storing. You might make a note to examine the potatoes regularly and use any of them that have gone soft or look as though they are beginning to spoil.

I made heavy cotton duck fabric bags lined with black breathable landscape fabric- (not the plastic vinyl rolls- it has to be the fabric type-usually black on one side and brown on the other-) and closed with a drawstring. This is a common storage solution in Sweden. I use one for my onions, as well- stored separately. The area I live has humid conditions and my potatoes never stored well despite trying all of the conventional solutions. This bag allows me to buy more than a few potatoes at a time because they store so well.

You could also put a box in the file drawer and put some straw (not hay) in the box to nestle your taters in.

You can put them in a Plastic that with cover in a dark place even in the basement. With it being concealed and cool they should stay good
