Here is some info for you
Wet the sofa (This helps paint to soak in) then paint using Chalk Paint. When thoroughly dry use either Clear wax to seal it. Hope that helps.
Instead of painting the couch, perhaps you could use a slipcover instead.

Longterm I know a lot of people who tried and regretted it. If the sofa is on its way out and you're looking for a short term solution I say go for it. However, if not done properly it cracks and wears and sometimes it even comes off on your and your clothes. When you are checking out these links, look to see if the DIYers have a follow up.
