How to Build a Simple Wooden Tabletop

Need to replace a tabletop? We found a really cool coffee table on the side of the road, but the glass top was shattered. So, we built a new wooden top for it from many boards. It's really easy to do. Here's how! Check out this project and more easy DIYs on our blog.

Cut boards to be the length and width desired for your table. Lay them all out until you are satisfied with the look. Depending on what look you want for your tabletop, pre-stain your boards different shades for a rustic look, or leave natural and stain once it’s put together at the end.

In order to build a wooden tabletop using a Kreg jig, the key is to make sure that there are a lot of pocket holes going in each direction from each board.

We recommend doing two pocket holes out wide on one side, then one to two pocket holes in the center going in the other direction.

Add pocket screws and attach the boards together. Make sure that when you’re joining the boards you do two other things. 1) use a bead of wood glue between the boards to prevent bending, and 2) clamp down the seam of the two boards to ensure they remain flush.

Run a router over the outside edge for a clean look OR just use a sander to round or smooth off the edge.

Flip upside down and screw base into the tabletop. Make sure it's very secure!

Enjoy your rustic new tabletop. Remember to apply polyeurathane to protect it from dings and water rings.

Nice table top. For anyone without a Kreg jig screwing boards on the underside will hold the top together. Simple to make and a great look.
