We made a mistake by using solid stain on our enormous deck seeing that it was labeled to last the longest.~ 7 years. Unfortunately it look bad every year and needs touch up or completely repainting. In our case we should have used a transparent stain, its very unfortunate.....
To update or change the look of exterior red brick walls, stain the brick with an iron oxide-based brick tint or penetrating masonry stain. Bricks, like ceramic tiles, are clay based blocks that are formed, fired and then cooled. They are porous and readily soak up stains and tints. Because older red brick walls may be discolored from years of weathering or prior layers of masonry sealer, any new stain application may dry with some color variations.
1
Brush the brick surface with a soft-bristled brush. Vacuum particles and dust from the brick surface. This step is necessary if you're staining an interior brick wall.
2
Scrub brick gently with a non-ionic cleaner and water. Use a soft-bristled brush with cleaner to prevent damage to bricks and mortar joints. Some masonry cleaners incorporate acids to clean concrete surfaces. The National Parks Service cautions homeowners not to use acid-based cleaners, especially if masonry is older and in need of restoration. If you plan to use a power washer, set it on a low setting.
3
Rinse away loosened dirt with a hose.
4
Choose stain. If the brick facing has a southern exposure, consider a masonry sealer with stain. The sealer will prevent colors from oxidizing and fading in the sun. Brick-tinting kits are increasingly popular because they include most of the supplies a homeowner needs for a brick-tinting project. Many masonry stains and kits are sold through home improvement retailers and masonry suppliers.
5
Protect window frames, doors and trim with masking tape, plastic sheeting and drop cloths. Cover floors and tape the edges of the drop cloths or plastic sheeting to the edge of the wall. Masonry stains and tints stain everything and don't wash off.
6
Mix the stain and test the color on an inconspicuous brick. Follow kit or manufacturer's directions if the stain requires "thinning." According to the House-Painting-Info webssite, many masonry stains don't need "thinning," but other stains might. Check your directions.
7
Apply the stain. If you don't to stain the mortar, apply the stain or tint with a bristled paintbrush or a small paint roller. Apply thin coats of stain to prevent drip runs and drip marks. If you don't mind stained mortar, apply stain on brick walls with a paint roller. Use an even back-forth movement and roll over any runs or drips.
Look into stain that is formulated for brick. My brother in law was a brick mason and he would do this for customers on occasion. Usually it was someone who, after installation, decided they didn't like the color. He said it was a bit of a pain but always had great results. Once you get the tone you desire, consider adding a sealer to help preserve it because it will fade over time.
Agreed they make stains for masonry products such as brick that would definitely be a better choice and last much longer than paint. I would rent a sand blaster (or hire a company to come in and do it) and sand blast the whole patio first though.
I would probably use a pressure washer instead. Sand blasting may be too severe. Pressure washers will wash and clean the bricks, but you need to be careful so you don't damage bricks. There an a few nozzles and settings.
I have stained and painted concrete, I think paint works best. However, I would consult with a specialist to find the right paint for your bricks. We used BM floor and wall for concrete.
There are masonry stains available out there that might take care of that for you. Talk to the sales people who carry those types of products about your specific situation and neeeds.

You could look at Brick & Tile Paints or You could look at Fence Colours (I have painted
concrete posts to match my fence panels and they are fine) but if they fade I could top up the colour again!
Awesome to how helpful this is! Thank you!
