Hi guys!!

If you have been following for a while then you know that we just got a new puppy and she is definitely curious about the Christmas trees so traditional tree skirts were not cutting it this year. I decided I wanted a cleaner more traditional look and a way to keep her from going under the tree and started searching for a large collar or box online but most were quite pricey. I decided as part of my DIY tree I would use scrap wood and paneling to make a tidy box for under the tree.

Where to start?

First you want to measure your tree stand to ensure you make a box big enough to fit the tree stand into easily. Next measure from the floor to just under the bottom branches of your tree.

Next make basic cuts:

We had extra paneling from our foyer project so we decided to use that to match. Obviously your sizes are dependent upon the size of your tree stand- but ours needed to be 21.5 x 21.5 and 9 inches tall. We made it a bit bigger to leave wiggle room! We also cut 4 pieces of 2x2 to 9 inches.

This will be what you have after initial cuts.

Next make a box:

On two of your panel pieces you will want to use wood glue and a Brad nails to attach your 2X2’s on the ends.

The next step requires 2 sets of hands: Now all you have to do is line up your sides and Brad nail your paneling into the 2x2’s to create a box shape. Please see video.

Next: Add decorative trim if you want! We had scrap wood at we used to trim out the top and bottom of our box. Cut all pieces to length and secure with wood glue and a few brad nails.

Finally- Use wood filler to cover all nail holes and sand lightly before painting.

I don’t mind that ours does not fold down but if you need it to for storage consider an L bracket that hinges instead of 2x2’s!

After your first round of cuts these are your materials.

By adding the 2x2’s you can easily make your 4 sides into a box!

Here is how you use the 2x2 pieces to assist you in making a box

Here I am adding trim!

Here I am giving it one of a few coats of paint!

Finished!! Here is the box in all her glory! Creates a nice clean bottom and keeps babies and animals from getting under the tree!

Be sure to use wood glue to attach the trim!
