How do I create seasonal decorations for a painted family tree?

My daughter painted a large tree (no leaves) on a wall in our entryway. For Thanksgiving we had family members write on fall colored leaves thankful notes. I'd like to use this for other seasons so any ideas on elements to add to creatively decorate the tree?

Hi Debbie, for the upcomig holidays, why not cut out different colored ornaments from paper and do a siimilar exercise? For Valentines you could cut out hearts, shamrocks for St. Patricks, etc., It might also be fun at some pint to have people look through old photos and place some of those on the tree.

In the winter you could make snowflakes and decorate it with Christmas lights. You could also make a Christmas countdown with it. In the spring you could have buds and new green leaves and maybe some Easter eggs.

You could cut shapes like ornaments, presents, trees or snowflakes and let others write messages on them then save those and the others in a zip loc baggy for each holiday

What a great idea! How about in between holidays you could have your family names, birthdates, etc on there?

For summer, it would be cute to have a clothes line on it.

Yes! and if you have branches, you could have "branches" of the family. I think it would look great

  • For the holidays I would either make it an advent tree with tiny gift or little sentiments that hang from the branches. Or you could take a photo of family members, frame them and add them as "leaves" on the branches. Keeping family near during the season kind of tribute.

I think light weight plastic xmas bulbs would be cute. You could drape garland around the tree trunk or drizzle tinsel around it.

For different holidays you could add different items.

4th of July you could tape beautiful pictures of exploding fire works above the tree.

Don't forget to decorate for birthdays. I picture of a birthday cake would be cute near that person on the family tree.

I see pretty fairy lights hung on these branches. They are available in both battery operated or plug in. (If you decide on the battery operated, be sure to use rechargeables as these lights, even though they are tiny, will eat batteries like crazy.)

As fairy lights are not heavy, they would not require much hardware to mount. I would suggest small clear Command hooks in strategic locations on the branches. You could also replace the brown string with narrow ribbon in holiday colors/patterns, and hang miniature decorations from it, or clip them on to the ribbon with mini clothespins.

We did this in our home too and here is what we putt up...

Grateful leaves for fall, sometimes bare or snowflakes for winter, we would add a garland for Christmas, flowers for spring, and for summer we made green leaves.

How about adding decorations using removable glue dots. The leaves or ornaments can be changed out with the season. https://amzn.to/2Vz2Ijc

Hi Debbie: For Christmas, you can buy clear, flat glass bulbs at most hobby stores. They're easier to store :) Get some permanent markers and have the family members sign a bulb and when the marker is dry, you can spray with clear gloss. Do a few test bulbs to see how they turn out.
