How does Dixie Belle Gator Hide work on previously painted surfaces?

Hello, community, hope you are all safe and well! Has anyone applied Dixie Belle Gator Hide on surfaces that were previously painted with another brand of paint? How did it work? Dixie Belle won't provide any information to this effect and the responses I have received from them are quite useless. Does anyone have any input to this effect?

Thank you so much!

Hi Rini, everything I have read about Dixie Bell Gator Hide is that its a top coat meant as a super tough sealer. So, I would say it could absolutely go over anything just make sure what you're putting it over is in good shape - not flaking off etc. Here's the product on Amazon, I would definitely read the reviews for more experienced information: https://amzn.to/3mH5xe8

      Hello, dear!

Thank you soooo much for taking the time to answer to me!

I do restoration and furniture et al, but I have never ever in my life used Gator Hide or anything by Dixie Belle, for that matter. I typically make all my paints and stuff since I am 'classically trained, some might say' -haha. I bought it directly from them but they don't offer any advice other than "Use with OUR this and that..."

      Thank you again! Stay safe!

I think you will be just fine, but I agree with Grandma's House...make sure there is nothing flaking off the piece you are going to paint.

      Cheryl,

Thank you so much for taking the time to look it up. Actually, the funny part is that Dixie Belle themselves only tell you to 'test first' and try to convince me of stripping the whole thing allover -not a possibility in this case- and it seems as if they are trying to push their other products on me. Even their videos on YouTube are made by 'ambassadors' who don't explain the whole of it, and the product comes with a label full of health warnings but no instructions at all!

I will check your links, though. Maybe you found something that I haven't!

      Again, thank you a million!

Oh, my! For some reason the site just won't post my replies to each of you!

I want to thank you all so much for taking the time to research and answer my question!! I have seen some of the links before, but I guess at this point, I may just take a shot at it and pray it comes out great and I don't die in the process, since the only text on their label -aside from the name and 'shake well'- are horrible warnings of what it can do to your health! haha.

Anyway, Thank you all, @Cheryl A @GrandmasHouseDIY @Chloe Crabtree again sooo much!

Please stay safe and very, very happy!

When you use the Gator Hide be sure to get the Dixie Belle Blue Sponge Applicator made just for applying Gator Hide! It fits in your hand perfectly.

  • I've never tried this brand but if it were me, if I wasn't getting the information I needed from the manufacturer, I would move onto a different brand/product where all the information I needed was readily available. But, like I said, that's just me.
