How to Make Bleached Pinecones

I love the soft look of these bleached pinecones. You can buy them apparently, but they are very easy to make at home with a few materials. For this DIY project you will be using bleach. Please make sure to safely protect your eyes, skin and clothing.

Do this project outside...seriously. Bleach fumes are strong and you need excellent ventilation.

Start with 20-30 pinecones in good condition. Place in a plastic container. I used a 5 gallon bucket.

Pour 1.5 gallons of bleach over the pinecones and add enough water to cover. The pinecones will float. Wear rubber gloves while pushing the pinecones under the bleach/water mixture.

Make sure the pinecones are completely submerged.

Add bricks or a weighted object to rest on the pinecones to keep them submerged for 24 hours.

Pinecones close up when they are wet. Lay out on a newspaper to dry.

Here you can see how the pinecones are drying and opening up. Once they dry, they do not smell like bleach at all.

These beautiful pinecones are perfect for holiday decorating.
