Generally speaking, you need a flat, smooth, clean surface to apply the peel and stick wall paper to. The tiles in your kitchen most likely have grout between them which would cause an indentation of the wall paper.

You won't get a smooth look going over tiles. If you don't like the color of the tiles, you might want to consider painting them.

Hello wallpaper over a not flat surface might look unsettling, irregular. Adhesion might be difficult as well.

If you wanted to try an economical test you might go to the dollar store and get some ( removable) contact paper and put a small piece of your tiles and see how the surface looks to see if it would be an attractive pleasing option.

Hi Barb, it will really depends on how smooth they are. If they are smooth, without indentations, you should be able to cover them. You may have trouble getting something to stick to them though if they are not perfectly smooth. As someone said above, I would consider painting them.

I would go with stick on tiles over wallpaper... I just think it'll be more resistant and hold up to water splashes, heat, etc. over time. The key appears to be giving the wall paper a good flat surface. If the surface isn't flat you will see the unevenness in the finished look.

You won't get a smooth finish. The tile pattern will transfer to the wallpaper

The only issue you will run into, that I can think of, is the "grout" lines. You could avoid it by filling them in before you put the paper over it.

You would need to cut it into tiles to make it look right or buy Tile covers.

I agree with others, it wouldn't lay right over the grout. I'd make a template of the tile size and shape from cardboard and cut out squares that way! That's a big project.

I know this is not the direction you were asking about but what about painting them instead?

Hi Barb, this may work for you if the wallpaper is fairly thick, are they tiles of wallpaper? You should be able to do this, if they are thinner, you are going to see the grout lines. You could try to match the grout lines with the edge of the wall paper, if you cut it to match the tiles (say 4 tiles long by 4 tiles wide, then apply)

Sounds like a lot of work. I would paint or cover with beadboard instead.
