How to fix dent in table ?
We had a custom kitchen table top made
it is stained and polyurethaned
A dent on top of table happened when bringing it inside
i made the mistake of applying poly over the dent ( which was a suggestion-not here on post) but now I have an obvious brush stroke (foam brush) mark. How can I fix this without stripping the entire table top?
thanks and Merry Christmas!

Hi Peggy, I am so sorry to hear your table got dented :( UGH. How frustrating. Do you have any of the stain that was used on the tabletop? If so, you could very light sand the area where the dent is and restain that area and then re-topcoat. Unfortunately, to make it look good you would need to use the same products the maker used so that it is seamless. If you attempt it yourself, try to keep any products just to the spot that was dented and not any surrounding areas. Use a detail (small art brush) if possible so that you are only working in the area affected. Alternatively, you could always contact the person who made it for you and see if they can fix it. Best of luck!
Try some very fine steel wool (0000) just on that spot. It may be just enough to dull the extra shine. Use a very light touch - you can always go over it again if you need to, but it's much harder to go back if you've taken off too much. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
Merry Christmas Peggy

Hello there,
Gently rub it down following the grain of the wood) with 000 fine sand paper or glass paper or any non scratch sanding pad (I would probably use the Pads they use for making Faberge Eggs from Goose Eggs) then apply a mat or eggshell or satin Polyurethane varnish with a fine brush or use a clear wax on it. Best wishes.
Oh no, what a horrible thing to happen. Is that a real wood or a veneer.
Hi Peggy, hope this helps you out,

Try using some mineral spirits to remove the poly. You can also try a green kitchen scrubby to remove the poly. To fix the dent. Place a damp cloth over the dent. Set an iron to medium and iron the cloth. This should raise the dent.

I believe you can use fine steel wool to remove and just fix that section. I hope one of the suggestions work to save you an entire refinish.
Try rubbing that spot with a burlap cloth. We've done that to take the shine off a wood table after we refinished it and applied the poly.
try lightly sanding it just over the affected area and then use wood filler
Use a damp cloth on the dent and place a hot iron the cloth. The crushed cells of the dent will expand with the heat from the steam.
If you don’t match the stain perfect it will stick out like a sore thumb fill in with wood fill
Use a 600 or 800 grit sandpaper, shine a bright light on the spot, and carefully and lightly sand. Wipe often to check progress.
Hello,
Rub it down with the very finest sandpaper in the way of the grain, just enough to remove the varnish. Then apply water on a small sponge or newspaper to try and get the dent to take up the water, which will make the wood swell. Steaming may also help. Then ask the folk who made the table what you should do regarding the finish. In fact, if you ask they may be able to do the whole repair for you on site?
Even 1000 grit sand paper is going to make it worse, IMO- as the layer you added doesn't "stick up" enough to be "noticed" with the sanding and you'll end up sanding the original finish as well.
Personally, I would buy a tintable wood putty & mix several samples & let them dry on a scrap of wood before actually filling the hole.
Then re-coat the whole side in a flat or mat urethane.
