Oops! so sorry, my reply didn't end up where I planned it to be. Thanks for alerting me to this, Flipturn!
I saw someone on Instagram who did this though I can't remember the person's name, my apologies. You might try a Google search, I'm not sure I've seen this on Hometalk.
Hi Carol, my brother in law builds a rink every year in their back yard and he uses pallets that he has collected all around the edge of the rink. It provides a frame and boards for playing hockey.
You didn't stipulate ice or roller, so I'm assuming roller. You can frame with pressure treated lumber because it comes in contact with the ground. You will also need to treat the lumber for the floor since it is so close to the ground. Basically, you are building a wooden patio.

Hello there,
I have neve done this project myself, but should think you would want to make sure it was a safe place to Cling too, (Fence) or Soft Place to Fall, (Bales of Hay) or maybe a Heavy Kerb Stone Edge. Best wishes.

My grandpa used to flood the backyard for my dad and his sister when they were kids. They lived in Toronto so it was cold enough that it would be an instant ice rink.

Hi! When we were kids, we would flood the low spot in the yard. I bet lawn edging would give you a distinct area. Good luck and stay safe!
