My husband made me a hanging door to put on a rail. He cut down the 2x6’s so the distressed wood would sit inside the 2x6’s. It came out really nice, but I need some type of stain/paint for the 2x6 to blend in with the distressed wood. Any suggestions?
Hi Jamie, There is a product by Varathane that is called Weathered or Aged wood accelerator. It is great for making new wood look old. You just brush it on and wait It starts to turn almost immediately. I love it and use it all the time.
A grey stain wiped on with a rag will do the trick. Start with a small amount on a rag an spread it far. You can always add a second coat but you have to sand and start all over if you put on too much. A tiny bit on the rag and your fingertip for starters.
Hi Jamie, your door looks beautiful. We make our own homemade stain for wood using rusty nails. Depending on how long you let the stain stand you'll get different aging effects. You can find all the information here - https://acraftymix.com/blog/diy-aging-wood-stain/
If you like it as it is but need to seal it, Use a Clear Wax, If you want it to look older, Use Antique Wax. If you want to change the colour, either go for a Fence or external wood stain and then wax or go for an interior wood stain and then Wax or seal with a Polyurethane Varnish, or use a Coloured Varnish. The choice is yours! Have fun.
Hello. Besides the commercial wood aging products I have use the steel wool and vinegar solution and painting of that on new wood. In particular on pressure treated wood decking before staining to get the green yellow color out of the wood.
Take a photo of the stain and bring it to a paint shop to see if they can matrch it, also if you can snip off a piece of wood the paint shop can match it that way.
I would take it to a store and have them help you match it. Since you have multiple tones, I would try and imitate that. Make sure to wipe quickly after application of the stain so that you can achieve light tones. Then go back and apply a bit more in some areas. It looks like you will need a grey and brown shade to match. It will be fun to see how it turns out.
Oh, it looks wonderful! Great job! You will never be done working in the house! I've been in my house for over 55 years and there are still things to do. One thing get done and another needs doing and then something breaks and you fix that and then, somehow, the house finds out you have a few extra bucks and will find a way to make you spend it on the house. I don't know how it knows, but it does! Wonderful job, congratulations!

Use weathered wood accelerator stain and do your best. Might have to do multiple coats.

Thanks for the idea. I won’t use it for the door but have a dresser I will definitely use it on. Never saw anyone do it that way. Great thanks
I would do the vinegar and steel wool stain to match the old wood.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ubdaL8ja6s&t=144s

Hi Jamie: You can check this site:

or consider doing this:

https://renovatedfaith.com/paint-that-looks-like-stain/

You most likely won't get the new wood to look like the old wood, but if you do them all, you may like your finished project more.
Good luck
P.S. Your hubby did a fine job! :)

I would just let it weather for a year out side. Then once weathered, stain to preserve.. Good luck
