Hi Vickie. I did a bit of reading about your DIY rust removal. This is what I learned: A great way to remove rust stains from carpet is with soap and water. One teaspoon of dish soap in one gallon of water. Use a sponge to transfer the soapy water on to the rust stain. Let it set 15 mins and then blot the water back up. Don't rub. Rinse the spot with cold water and blot back up again. Repeat if necessary. Good luck Vickie and Happy New Year.
Hi there. I think it would help to know what the carpet is made of since the directions for wool would be different that nylon, etc. Also, you could call a carpet store and ask their thoughts. Generally, they have a good information.

Pour vinegar over the rust stain and leave it to work. Blot with a clean cloth.
Is the carpet wall-to-wall or is it a smaller size that can be lifted off easily?
How large is the rust area that needs to be removed?

You can put some cotton wool balls with white vinegar on them directly on the stain. The vinegar will loosen the rust.
