If you are going to have books, then group similar ones together or going completely random.
I add small decor items in front of mine like small photo frames that are unique.
Rule of 3s if always good unless your shelves are extremely wide.

This has been a rough one for me also.
I tend to lean towards less is more. Nothing worse then a bookcase where it looks like somebody felt the need to put everything cute that they own on.
You don't want to be so over whelmed that you miss anything.
I use the 3 & 5 rule. Either grouping of 3 or 5 objects. Of course that doesn't mean you can't have just one object to grab people's attention.
Personalize it. I had hubby cut out letters displaying my screen name here on Hometalk.

Look at the space you have to put them and then, using a pencil and paper, imagine the paper is the wall, try different configurations and see which suits you best. Good luck and have fun!
