White-washing or painting the brick is always an option.
Would be helpful to know what you want to do. Picture of an update like this rather than a simple question about say, a plant should be asked in a few sentences or show a picture and tell us what you want to do. Upload using the camera at the bottom left of this frame.
Many people are choosing to white wash their dated redbrick. Add columns on either side and paint them off white or leave them natural wood color. If the mantel is brick add a thick board and stain it. Add a large mirror on top if you don't have one there already. So hard describe without knowing what you want.

If you’re considering paint, please consider using masonry/concrete dye/stain. It won’t ever chip, won’t show soot at the firebox and looks professional.
I would whitewash the fireplace to brighten it up. You could add a new wooden mantel, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtZTaj7e6_g
