Can I install two hanging chairs from my ceiling?
Hello! I want to install two hanging chairs or one floating bed from my ceiling in front of a bay window. I am wondering with that much weight (including 2 people sitting in them so say maybe 400lbs), would I need some sort of beam? And is it possible to do a beam on the exterior of the ceiling? There is a floor above, so there is already some weight load but nothing extra heavy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA
I would want them attached to a joist. Here's a link for you:

Hi Patricia, this article should give you some ideas and tips on how to hang a bed or chairs from the ceiling

Unless you have access to the support beam i would say no. You can lift the floorboard from upstairs and add more support if you have access.
You need to screw them into an existing support beam in the ceiling
My professional opinion is you’ll need to have a framer come look at this.
There’s not only the size of the Possible beam or header at the tangent of the bay window, but there’s also span length and where the load is transferred to the foundation.
Consider only the chairs, no floor/ceiling joists are made to hold the kinetic load of a bed.
Wood is miserable in Tension and fabulous at Compression.
You will need to attach them to a beam in the ceiling and be sure to hang it up with hardware that supports 400lbs.
They would have to be suspended from joists or or heavy beams in the ceiling to support the weight you mention. Here are some mounts from Amazon that might work for your purpose:

I had a swinging bed on my houseboat back in the day, it was hung from the roof rafters which were sistered with extra lumber to beef them up to 4"x4". So I agree you would have to cut a hole in the ceiling or go upstairs and lift the floor to beef up the structure to hold the weight.
This shows how to hang one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqMXl6VU7Ds
You would need to put it into beems to hold with sturdy hooks and chains
Hello Patricia,
Get an Engineers report and then decide, or make a frame instead to hold it!
