This easy DIY cushion cover uses sherpa fabric for an oh-so-cozy tufted effect. Shop around for the softest faux fur you can find, it will make all the difference!

Read on to find out how to make this zipper-free DIY Tufted Cushion, because everything is better tufted…

All you'll need is linen in a natural shade and sherpa fabric!

To start, cut a large 40 x 40cm (16″) square in the linen fabric with at least 1cm (1/2″) allowance around the pattern. Adjust to fit your pillow inner if the dimensions are different.

Since this is a no-zipper pillowcase, the back consists of 2 flaps. Cut two 40 x 23cm (16 x 9″) rectangles with a 1cm (1/2″) allowance around.

For the tufting, cut seven 10 x 10cm (4 x 4″) squares in the sherpa fabric. Take 2 of these squares and cut them in half diagonally so that you have 5 full squares and 4 triangles.

Arrange the sherpa shapes in a diamond pattern like in the picture above. Pin each shape to the linen fabric and sew them on using a medium zig-zag stitch.

If you'd like more insight into this step, check out my blog post where you can find a detailed tutorial with plenty of photos!

For the back flaps, press the seam with your iron on one of the long sides of the rectangles and sew a seam close to the edge.

To finish the cushion, lay down the front piece, right side up (the side with the tufting). Lay one flap, wrong side up, then lay the second flap on top of the first, also wrong side up. Pin all the pieces together.

Sew a straight line all around the pillowcase. Once you’re done, press the seam with your iron and turn the pillowcase inside out. Push out the corners with a pen if needed. Press the pillow again so that the seams are crisp.

That’s all, fit your cushion insert in the pillowcase and enjoy!

To help prevent the squares from shedding, I would recommend applying Fray Check all around the cut edges after stitching them on to the cover.

Looks great and super idea. Did you make one of the back flaps wider the than the other so the pillow form is completely covered? Clipping the Sherpa within the seam allowance would make it easier to sew i think.
