Minwax stain over steel wool and vinegar stain

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried oil based stain over homemade Vinegar/steel wool stain.
I am trying to achieve an old wood look with brown and grey but I do not like the looks of grey paints or stains they look to blue. I thought that the Vin/Steel would look more natural. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Try this on a scrap piece of wood and see what you think. It may work well for you.
I would use a General Finishes stain. They have a beautiful gray. You can call them for advice they are very helpful.
If you go with stain over vin/steel go with a water based stain. It will absorb in better while the oil may float on the surface and possibly react with the vin/steel stain. You can try on sample boards.
I would test it on scrap wood or on the back of the piece you are working on.
Hello yes I have done this but only in an outdoor application on pressure treated decking. It did age the wood planks nicely and take the green yellow color out of the new pressure treated wood. Sometime later we apply the exterior stain that yielded an appealing result with less newness.....of replacement boards evident.
I would suggest getting a test piece of wood and trying it. Stains are tricky as it also depends on the wood type how the color turns out.
