How To Whitewash Brick
You can thin white latex paint with water and use it to "paint" your brick a white wash. My cousin did it by watching youtube videos and it did great.
Hi CaroleRay. Thin down white latex paint with water a 50/50 mix. Use a large brush to apply this mixture to your fire place. Then use rags to wipe it back off. Keep applying the paint and wiping it back off until you get the desired effect. Good luck.
This might be the look you are going for: German smear mimics the look of irregular stones and heavy mortar joints, a style often found on centuries-old cottages and castles throughout northern Germany. The technique is akin to whitewashing bricks, but instead of using diluted latex paint, homeowners coat the brick with a layer of wet mortar.

White washing is super easy, fast and cheap. I did our monster wall a couple years ago and WOW.
