First, we drew the letters out on some card stock.
DIY Rattan Initials
I found some awesome letters at Michaels that were $30 each. I thought it was a little expensive and figured I could DIY them for a lot less!
This project cost $0.00 to make as I had everything at home. I’ve added the materials and where you could get them if you don’t have stuff at home.
The next step was to cut out the letters on the card stock to use as a template on the hard board.
I had some extra frames laying around so I used the back board from them to cut out the letters.
First I needed to remove the hangers off the back.
They easily came off with a butter knife or you could use any flat tool.
We were able to fit both letters on one piece of hard board.
We then traced the letters onto the hard board for cutting.
Using a jigsaw, we carefully cut out the letters. Be careful not to let the hardboard break as it’s quite fragile.
We then cut the hardboard letters out of the placemats.
We then had three layers. You will only need the placemat and the hardboard letters from here on out.
The placemats had several layers so I used some spray adhesive to make sure everything was stuck. I also used spray adhesive to stick the placemats onto the hardboard letters.
The next step was using the hot glue gun to do a finishing border with rope.
I then used some stain wipes to add a color onto the letters. I tried stain which didn’t take to the material. I also tried antique wax, but it gave it to much of an aged look. The wipes worked best!
I love how they turned out and they’re the perfect addition to the nursery.
