Can I paint this vintage ceramic piece with chalk paint?

I love vintage ceramic pieces. I bought this piece at one of my favorite thrift stores last week for a whopping $2.00 because it was 50% off day. I brought it home and squirted full strength Dawn dish detergent on it, grabbed a plastic scrub brush and started cleaning off the grungy surface. It is currently covered with an ugly combination of gold, silver, and bronze. I don’t like this color finish so I want to paint it. Having never used chalk paint, I’m asking if I can put chalk paint on top of the ugly finish?

This is how it currently looks. It is definitely a “diamond in the ROUGH”. Thanks in advance for any help you give me.
This is how I would love for it to look but just NOT so shiny! Found this photo online. Help!
