This is the first piece of furniture I’ve built and I’m so proud of myself! It’s a great beginner furniture build. I built mine with leftover wood from our deck so it cost me $0 but even if you had to buy the wood, this wouldn’t be an expensive project!

You can find more details and videos of my build on my Instagram page @montross.made

What you’ll need:

2x8s

2x6s

Miter saw

Kreg jig

Sander

Reciprocating saw

Step 1: Cut your boards

Decide how big you want your bench and cut your boards. I used two 2x8s for the bench seat, and two 2x6s for each leg. My bench is about 4 ft long and 1.5ft tall.

Step 2 (optional): Angle the legs

I wanted my legs to sit at an angle, so I used my miter saw and cut each piece at a 10° angle. This is totally optional, but if you do it, make sure you cut the top and bottom of each leg, this way when they’re attached to the bench, they still sit flat on the floor.

Step 3: Sand

Give everything a quick sanding. You don’t need to go crazy here because you’ll be doing a lotttt more sanding in a little bit....

Step 4: Rough up your boards

I used a reciprocating saw, and a hammer to rough up the edges and faces of each of my boards. I wanted a really “beat up” look so I did quite a bit of this, but you can do as much or as little as you’d like.

Step 5: Sand again

Sand everything again- really well this time! You can see above the top board isn’t sanded while the bottom board is.

Step 6: Attach

Attach everything using pocket holes and pocket hole screws.

You’ll be left with a cute little bench! You can stain it if you’d like, but I left mine natural. I was also shocked and pleasantly surprised that it is actually pretty sturdy!! A great beginner DIY, and definitely a confidence builder.

Not a question... Suggestion.....I think the bench is cute, but unsafe! I can easily see a teenager say, flop down kinda rough.... And the leg to seat joint giving way. I think it REALLY needs diagonal braces!
