Farmhouse Bathroom Shelving

I was scouring (aka wasting time) the other week Facebook for vintage items for sale and came across a post for free firewood. I don’t know why, but I clicked on the post and noticed spindles in the pile of wood. I messaged the guy and said I would take it…so my driveway has been sitting full of s-crap (Stephanie’s crap) wood!

The wood is in all various sizes, thicknesses, etc so it’s hard to make anything bigger than a shelf with it because no two pieces are alike. So I planned on making shelves for our downstairs powder bathroom that I just hung the vintage medicine cabinet in for the mirror. I bought cast iron brackets from Amazon and then cut one of the beautifully mitered pieces of wood. And wa-la! Shelves were created!

We only saw this house one time before we bought it …almost 3 months later! However, when we did see it, it was vacant. Which was good and bad. Good because I could come in and completely make it mine. Bad, because I do actually love looking at other people’s decor and seeing what fits and works in rooms, etc.

But our main level powder bathroom was super boring. It had a beautiful stained glass pendant light, a gold mirror and an oil rubbed bronze towel holder over the toilet…which I am just not a fan of! You drip water all over the place when you are trying to reach for the towel. It was just kind of bare looking, so I had to up it’s game!

To go with the mirror, I built the shelves. They are farmhouse style but it actually goes great with the style of our Victorian house. It’s more farmhouse looking to me than Victorian.

I started by tearing apart a bench type thingy from my scrap pile. I then mounted the brackets to my wood boards then used a level to hang them.

Lets Make It Together!

Supplies Needed:

Cast Iron Brackets

Coarse Thread Drywall Screws 6 x 1 1/4 in black

Wall Anchors

Hammer

Screw driver & drill bit

Wood cut to shelves – I cut mine at 24″ wide

Once they were hung, it was time to decorate!

This little bathroom has had a full transformation since we bought the house! The floors have all been redone to a darker shade, the mirror, the towel holder and the shelves! It’s so inviting now…a great place to hide out if you’re a mommy!! haha

Wow nice save on that wood. It's beautiful. What a waste that would have been in a burn pile! Shocking what people toss out isn't it? Those shelves are gorgeous. All that lovely old wood patina!

I noticed you have some silver screws in the mounting brackets. A little bit of black Sharpie pen will cure that! :-)
