Add shelving to the drywall section. Use beadboard 4' x 8' piece under $20. Cut it to size to cover the drywall. Frame it in with wood and add shelves. Paint the wood walls any color you like and leave the shelving frame wood stain to stand out or a lighter or darker shade than the walls.

  • I'd maybe paint the wooden shelves a lighter color such as white or a light gray. Then, maybe you could do shelves or a gallery wall in the open space.

I think you could paint it all the same color and get a nice cohesive look.

Hello. I think decorative art is always impactful wall accessory.

Economical sourcing is to go to thrift stores consignment shops garage sales. Amazing costly art +frames can be found for $3-10. Some include glass and matts. Frames can be spray painted.

Personally, I would seal the wall and paint it. It makes your room really dark and dreary as it is. I agree that you can get some very large frames/artwork at Goodwill and such for a very low cost. Use what you like, spray frames you don't like, do your own art over the existing paintings.

You can use some very low cost/free items to put in the frames such as pressed flowers and leaves, cut-out's of fabric, even a piece of a cheap shower curtain! Your choices are endless.

Another idea is to hang decorative blankets, tapestries, quilts and the like. It really depends what your own style is. Above all, have fun!

If you like the farmhouse look, then sand anywhere there is paint and seal it as is. Then add decor items onto the wall as you would any other style wall. Large clock, wreath, things like that. For inspiration browse sites like Kirkland's.

  • Paint white and put up some large black and white farmhouse style pictures.

  • Well, the wood is very cool. I would leave it, but if it's not your style, you could paint it. We've painted our wooden paneling and it's held up great. That drywalled area looks like it might be the perfect place to hang a large mirror...necessary in a bedroom!

White about whitewashing? You could keep some of the original feeling and lighten at the same time?
