I have been wanting to start my spring and Easter decoration-making. and of course, carrots are high on that list. But I wanted cute, rustic-looking wooden carrots for crafts, rather than the orange plastic ones I always see.

These DIY wood carrots are made out of scrap wood. They're the first ones I have made and I have a couple more options I will be sharing in another post.

1. Cut triangles

I started by just using some scrap wood we had. I cut triangles from them in three different sizes. You will see why in the end.

Painting the wooden carrots orange

2. Paint the carrots orange

I don't like bright orange, so I used a combination of different darker and lighter oranges.

Add ink to antique the wooden carrots

3. Add detail

If they were too bright I used an ink pad in brown color to go over them to antique them.

Adding detail to the wooden carrots

I added some polka dots to some and some "carrot lines' to others. Now it is time to add the carrot tops.

Using green twine for the carrot tops

4. Make the carrot tops

I used green twine. Mine was for the dollar store and came in the three-pack with the regular jute pack. I cut four five-inch sections for the top of each carrot.

Unraveling the green twine for the carrot tops

Then I unraveled it to make it look more wild. Then I tied more of the twine around the bottom part of the carrot top and cut the ends even so it would be easier to stuff into the top of the carrot.

Attaching the tops to the carrots

5. Attach the tops to the carrots

Here you can see I drilled a hole In the top of each carrot and then stuffed each carrot top down into the hole with a little bit of hot glue.

6. Stack & tie the carrots together

I stacked three different sizes together and tied them with some muslin I had torn into a strip.

Fun idea. Very spring like feel we all need after gloom of winter. Bought some fake carrots last year what was I thinking? Outrageously expensive. Then because I wanted them outdoors had to spray with spar. This is way much better and personal
