Alternative use for “TV hole”?
We have a large “hole” built into the wall above our gas fireplace where most people would place a huge TV. It’s probably 30 inches deep so it would take a lot of “decorative items” to fill the space, and we don’t really collect things. The lighting isn’t really good enough for plants, plus it would be really hard to get them watered way up there. Someday we might completely re-do the fireplace into a wood-burning one and the space will become part of the chimney, but that’s more money than we want to spend right now. So we’re looking for suggestions until then... Ideas, anyone?

What about a painting, a large piece of artwork, or a gallery wall?
I've seen people cover these with a huge piece of art and it looks fabulous! :)
Mirror or large scale art piece. Doesn't have to be a picture.
Before I purchase a large tv, I had a space like that. I had a large demijohn bottle with faux flowers in it.
If you are sure you won't ever be using this space, consider framing it in so that it is a regular wall that you can decorate with a large clock or wreath. If you decide to sell, you can let the new owners know there is a space for tv that is easily accessible.
You could add a door and use it as a place to tuck things away like presents hid from kids. Hang a piece of decor on the door to camouflage it.
Hi Julie, perhaps you can get a custom canvas printed for that area. Most large printing shops should be able to do it for you.
Use the depth of the area for storage of rarely used items;perhaps in nice looking boxes or baskets, then use the front part for a large piece of artwork.

You could sheetrock the area closed. Or go to Hobby Lobby, and use a 40% coupon and get a large print to cover the area. The Salvation Army and Goodwill sometimes have really pretty pictures.
I realize these ideas are for niches but some of the ideas could apply to the tv hole as well. Good luck!!!

Cover it with hanging art
Can you hang a piece of art over it?
Thanks everyone! I can always count on the Hometalk folks to help me with a puzzle! 😊
A mirror for sure. You can get a cheap piece of mirror cut locally to a custom size and then frame it yourself or purchase one of those framing kits. Or Ikea has some really large ones cheap!
Mount doors in front of it, and put the empty space to good use as seasonal storage for bulky items such as bedding, thick sweaters, etc. Only you will know what is behind those closed doors.
You can get a cheap mirror to fill this space.
