Hallway Makeover

While doing a little work in my attic I slipped off of a joist causing me to slip a foot through what I thought was the ceiling. However I discovered an awesome void over my hallway stairs this helped decide my next diy and was definitely worth the work.

Best herringbone wallpaper!

Love herringbone? We love this peel and stick herringbone wallpaper that Amazon reviewers swear by!

It began here. You will see the ceiling over the stairs is slanted and following the angle of the stairs. Nothing wrong with this there is plenty of headroom and it doesn’t effect much else.

Using a utility knife I carefully scored around all edges of the drywall I was wanting to remove. I then began to pull this down in small sections this made disposal and handling much easier.

With all the the drywall removed and the 2x4 supports out of the wall I was left with a blank canvas for creativity.

Ladder and walk board setup was a little tricky but I assure you it was safe at least I hope.

After taking all measurements I began to cut and hang my new actions of drywall.

Drywall all installed I moved on to the fun part of applying the seam tape and joint compound as this will be done in a series of steps it is ok to apply in thin layers to make sure it is all drying properly.

While the joint compound dried I tied an additional light into the existing recessed lighting already available in the hallway making sure this would not exceed the circuit. Doing this provided much needed lighting over the stairs and operated on the existing switches in place.

To give this an added element I opted to create a nice accent wall that would be sure to highlight the space. This was simple after making one template board with correct angles I just cut all additional boards to match and fit them into place.

Spacing between boards was determined using the speed square similar to how you would space boards on an outdoor deck.

With all accent boards in place a frame was added using 1x2 for a completed look

and I could not be more happy with the outcome.

Finish the area off with choice of paint in my case I wanted the accent wall to stand out. Definitely enjoying the impact this little diy has made

What kind of paint did you use for the black wall. And was it tongue and groove boards? Just a beautiful job.

Breath taking. One ? do you have a pull down to get into the attic? Nevertheless, It's just beautiful.

We had this type of area over our staircase in a 2 story condo we owned. Instead of opening the area up and making a high ceiling, we used the area as a storage closet for towels, since it was outside our bathroom. Created a large shelf using the 1/2 wall upstairs as a guide, then created a wall on the right side using 2x4s. Sheetrocked the walls outside and in, then purchased 2 cabinet doors and attached them to the front. Great use of space and who does not need more storage?
