How do you remove the vinyl window slats in a sliding window?

Hi Jan, is the glass pane one big piece or is it individual pieces of glass between the slats?

If they are between the glass, they are staying. If they are outside, they usually fit into small holes around the edge. Gently lift the plastic panes and they should pop out.

I have these also. They are a separate grid from the glass but I am not able to remove them for easy washing of the windows. I checked the posts listed above and they did not have my style of window grids. Any other ideas?

Check the edges of the window for plastic clips that appear to be pushed in, if you have them, the clips can come out then the grid can be removed from the window. If no clips are there, then the grid is there to stay until you replace the window.

If the glass panels are double panes and the grids are inside there is no way to remove them. If it's single pane glass the grids can be clipped in, double stick taped, or glued on. If you grab the middle of a grid and it pulls away from the glass they are clipped in on the sides. If the grid does not move it's either glued or taped on.

Hi! It depends on how they are attached, as the others have mentioned. I have the same type of grids on glass doors. I can remove them, but, don't because I don't want to damage them. Mine have screws in the corners. I've seen them with clips, too. If it's on the surface and not individual panes, you should be able to take them off. Mine look like grids when off. Good luck!

Hi Jan, if the panes are mounted on the outside you can simply unscrew them and remove, but if they are in between the panes of glass, the only way you can get rid of them is to get new windows. Hope this helps you out.

I had slats on our front door but that was single paned and I just cut the plastic and carefully removed it.

But my other door is double paned and the plastic grids are located inbetween the panes of glass. Taking the window apart would cause the argon gas to escape so I am just living with it.

Many replacement windows use vinyl window grilles to provide the appearance of several panes of glass. You might want to remove the grilles to clean them or change the appearance of the window. The most common window-grille installation simply uses a frame retainer on the inside of the window. These types of vinyl grilles are simple to remove and clean. However, some grilles are glued in and cannot be taken off without damaging the glass. How the grille attaches to the window greatly determines whether you can remove the grille or not.

Grasp the window grille at its center on the window. Attempt to pull the grille slightly off the glass. If the grille moves, it is removable. If the grille does not move, it is glued and is not removable.

Remove any plastic locks from the sash frame if the grilles have never been removed. Locate the small circular locks on the upper edge of each sash. Punch the lock rings out carefully with a small Phillips-head screwdriver and a hammer.

Pull the vinyl grille out slightly to bow its center. Pull down to unlatch the grill from under the upper frame grommet. Pull the sides and bottom of the grille from under the grommet, then pull it away from the window.

Start at the bottom when reinstalling the grille. Position the bottom part of the grille into the grommet and bow it slightly to install the top and sides.

If they’re just stuck on, you might be able to remove them. Check with a window manufacturer to see if it’s possible. If the panes are individual between the grid lines or the grid is between the glass, you’re unfortunately out of luck.
