DIY Burlap Toilet Paper Roll Napkin Rings

4 Materials

This last year as we have spent more time at home, my family has found ways to get creative with things we have in our home. Sure we could go out and buy napkin rings, but making them turned into an afternoon of fun with my kids. Each person made their own designs and when it was their turn to set the table they used the napkins rings they made. This is not only a creative, fun activity but a way to make setting the table fun.

First we gathered our supplies:

• toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls (empty)

• scissors

• burlap ribbon

• different widths, colors and designs of ribbon

• hot glue gun or tacky glue

• embellishments (if desired)

**NOTE** my children are old enough to use a hot glue gun with my supervision. If you have younger children you are doing this activity with, you may want to opt for the tacky glue or other crafting glue.

***Also- this project cost me $0. I searched through my stash of ribbon and crafting supplies and we used what I had on hand.

The very first thing you need to do is save the empty rolls of your toilet paper or paper towels. Two things to consider when determining how many empty rolls you’ll need:

• the width of your burlap ribbon

• how many napkin rings you need for your place setting

When you have enough empty rolls, start by measuring the width of the burlap onto the roll. Then cut the rolls down to size.

Next put a line of glue along the edge of the ribbon and attach it to the roll. Wrap the ribbon around the roll trimming off the ribbon where it over laps. Then apply another line of glue along the underneath edge of the ribbon and attach it to roll. It will look like the picture.

Next is where the fun and creativity begins. I added a layer of white ribbon that was a smaller width than the burlap. I applied it using the same method as the burlap. Attaching one side with a strip of glue, wrapping the ribbon around the roll, trimming off enough to overlap just a bit and glueing that top piece down.

This step is where you add color, layers of ribbon and detail. Be creative!!

I then added a third layer, thin width ribbon, to add a little more pop and interest. I simply tied this ribbon around the roll in a bow. You could tie it in a knot or glue it like the previous layers and add an embellishment, charm or button.

We made blue & white napkin rings and red & white ones too. My kids use these for Memorial Day, the month of July and Veteran’s Day.

we also used a wide navy blue & white striped ribbon to create a fun nautical theme. I’m on the hunt for a few fun beach themed buttons or charms I can add to the striped ones.

We used the red & white polka dot napkin rings for a Christmas Tablescape as well as for Valentine’s Day too. I thought we would throw them away after we used them, but we were all so pleased with how they turned out and how cute they were on our table we’ve kept them.
