Update Hutch?

I've seen on here that people have been painting them w/ chalk paint, and other types. Probably you might be able to as on here to find out some ideas.

Ideas other than painting:

Sand down to bare wood and just oil it.

Sand to bare wood and do the Japanese burn technique Shou Sugi Ban.

Replace the hardware with more modern.

Put peel and stick wallpaper over the back mirrors.

Wallpaper or replace the glass shelves with wood.

Remove the doors.

Remove the glass in the doors and replace with chicken wire (farmhouse).

Replace the hardware with something more up-to-date. Line the back with self-stick wallpaper (not contact paper). Those mirrors are a bit much! I would never paint this piece unless it were in terrible shape.

Up date the hardware to begin with.

There is a lot of reflection and glare in your hutch, I would feel a need to cut this down somewhat, it might be enough by covering the back wall of mirrors with peel and stick wallpaper.

Replacing the glass shelves with a thin solid shelf would give more definition to the interior.

I like the way you have your plates arranged, so you would not want a background that would compete with them.

Hi Jane, you have inherited a gorgeous piece of furniture! If it is not working for you then don't be afraid to paint it. There are beautiful examples of cabinets that have been painted. If you use a paint like Annie Sloan (it has no latex or acrylic in it) it can be easily removed at a later date if you (or someone else) wants to refinish it to its original state.

Change the items inside and display something different

Just replace the hardware...it'll make all the difference.
