I’m going to show you how to take a plain and boring plant pot and turn it into a expensive looking textured pot.

Give your planter a makeover with this best drywall compound that Amazon reviewers swear by!

I have an upcoming project that I wanted a gorgeous plant pot. I found this large metal plant pot at ikea for around $11!

I had all other supplies at home.

Materials:

Rope

Hot glue gun

Drywall compound

Gloves

First I measured 4” down all the way around the top and marked with a chalk pencil.

I then glued the rope along the marks.

I did the same thing along the bottom, measuring 3” from the bottom.

Then I began slathering the drywall compound onto the plant pot. I did a pretty thick layer and tried to get in all the nooks and crannies. I left some of the rope exposed for extra texture.

It dried faster than I expected.

Once the drywall compound was dry, I coated the whole thing in an off-white paint. I used Shoji-white by Sherwin Williams.

I then wanted it to look a little aged. I decided to use instant coffee to age it.

I mixed two colors:

1 Tbsp coffee, 2 Tbsp water

1 Tbsp coffee, 5 Tbsp water.

I then did a light layer over the plant pot.

It turned out exactly like I envisioned!!!

Looks great, but if exposed to humidity, will the drywall compound remain intact (despite being covered in paint)?

I would love to have a giant pot with a giant plant in my front yard. I'm thinking that maybe cement would work outside. I also thought that maybe some rope used for boating and stripes of chalk paint with marine varnish could work. Does anyone have a better idea?

  • What will happen if the pot gets squeezed in moving won't the finish outside crack? I'm thinking those pot walls are flexible under strain but maybe I'm wrong?
