This black and white DIY artwork was quick, easy, and inexpensive….and black and white are so popular right now!

Have you ever tried to make your own DIY artwork?

I started DIY’ing artwork after we bought our first house. There were so many bare walls and little money.

For my first DIY art project, I took a tablecloth my mother-in-law gave me. It was an embroidery tablecloth her mother made. It was slightly stained, and I didn’t think I would ever use it.

I saw an HGTV episode on using fabric stiffener to use on fabric for art projects. Let’s say you should have seen my mother-in-law’s face when she saw her mother’s tablecloth on our wall.

Believe me when I say you don’t have to be an artist to have artwork on your walls….

I also made these pictures out of a bird calendar. The frames came with a standard mat, but I wanted to make it look more finished. I added a brown ribbon around the mat to give the illusion of a double mat.

DIY Black and White Photos

To make the black and white prints, all you need is paper and a pair of scissors to get the job done. I also had a little help from a couple of paper punches, but they are definitely unnecessary.

  • Here Are The Optional Supplies
  • Cut White Card Stock

Cut the white card stock to fit the size of your frame. I cut three

8 1/4 x 10 1/4 pieces of cardstock. They should be slightly larger than the mat size if you are using a mat. Also, use the frame backing as a guide.

  • Cut the Black Card Stock

This is where your creativity begins. Have fun and make up the designs. It is amazing what can be done with varying size squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles.

  • Have Fun

Next, I cut a variety of different size circles and squares. Then I modified them by cutting the shapes again into triangles and ovals. The sky is the limit, and there is no right or wrong.

I strongly suggest making sure your shapes are straight and square; otherwise, your pattern will look uneven and less professional.

  • Make Your Design

I did not have a preconceived pattern in mind before I started. It just happened as I was cutting my shapes.

  • Pattern Two
  • Pattern 3
  • Frame

I believe an important part of DIY artwork is making sure your frame is of substance. A nice frame and mat will nicely accent your artwork.

Frames can be expensive, watch your craft stores and use coupons. I bought these frames at Michaels; they were a pack of three for 14.99. The mats were off-white, so I spray-painted them black for contrast.
